“You finally really did it. You maniacs, you blew it all up!”

After nearly ten years, I am resigning as a Slashdot reader. Five years ago this would have meant removing it as a bookmark; today it means deleting the feed from my RSS client.

This umpteen-millionth misleadingly headlined item finally did it. It can’t be truly representative because it doesn’t contain any egregious spelling or grammatical errors, but as a bonus the linked article is really a thinly veiled sales pitch.

The site that originally promised “News for Nerds” has been too overcome with spammers and zealots to actually demonstrate any understanding of technology. It’s sad. This has been true for a while, but even on the most idiotic stories — especially on the most idiotic stories — there were usually a few comments by genuinely smart people that were valuable, and made the site worth reading.

The comments on this particular post are almost all good, actually, but I just can’t take it anymore.

From the 10th anniversary of Slashdot, a series of articles on the history of the site.
